Three Options for expanding a VMWare DiskImage

Some time ago we created a virtual machine with Windows XP that had a 4 GB C: drive (system) and 8 GB D: drive (data). With all those service packs and automatic updates a 4 GB drive for the Windows system is too small as we all know now.

I see three options to get around the problem:

Option 1:

Create a third virtual drive inside the VM (e.g. 10 GB) and extend the C: partition onto the second drive. To do this you must move the page file from C: to D: (you can’t have the pagefile on an extended disk).

Option 2:

Use VMWare Converter to create a clone of your system and increase disk size during this process.

Option 3:

Resize a VMWare Disk Image using VMWare’s built in tools and this GUI, then use an ISO image of the GPartEd Live CD to resize the partition.

“Gmail Space”: Using the Gigabytes of your GMail account as backup drive – With a Firefox Extension

Using the Gmail Space Extension for Firefox you can copy files from your hard disk into your gmail account with a click of the mouse – e.g. for backup purposes or to transfer files between PCs.

Files are stored in your gmail account as normal emails with file attachments, so you can retrieve the files using Gmail’s web interface, even without having installed the plugin!

Currently each GMail account has some 2.7 GB of filespace (and this value is growing), not bad for an online-backup medium!

Fixing a remote computer (Dad’s, Mom’s?)- without travelling there

Until recently my favorite tool for remote control of the PCs of Dad, Mom and Father-in-law was LogMeIn. A great service and the free edition is powerful enough for the daily problems. But you need to go there at least once to install the logmein-client so you can later remotely control it.

Now with Crossloop there is another option if you need to get access right now. You and the person in front of the remote PC install and start a piece of software, enter a common security key and you have access to the desktop. CrossLoop is an innovative piece of software, built over TightVNC technology, that allows you control the computer desktop of a remotely located friend using your own keyboard and mouse.

The only condition is that both of you must be connected to the internet at the same time. The CrossLoop option comes in handy when the problem is too complex (like you want to diagnose some Windows Error message) or your friend needs assistance for installing some software on his machine. You can take control of his machine and fix the issues while he has gone to grab a cup of coffee.
