Google reports findings about disk drive failures from their flock of 100.000 drives

Some engineers of google have published a study entitled “Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population” showing the results of an analysis of over 100,000 drives which had been in use at one of the numerous google data centers. Although they state that drives of certain manufacturers are more prone to fail than others, they don’t say any names.

The study’s key findings are:

  • very little correlation between failurerates and either elevated temperature or activity levels
  • Some SMART parameters have a large impact on failure probability
  • Failure predition based on SMART parameters alone are unlikely to be useful
